Managing
Trees During Construction
Construction projects regardless of size should
always take into consideration the existing
trees and shrubs of the construction site long
before any actual construction takes place. It's
important to include an Arborist in this planning
phase. Arborists can conduct a preliminary tree
resource evaluation on the site that can assist
the architects and developers in placement of
buildings, driveways, parking lots, etc... to
help both preserve and protect valuable trees
and shrubs. Without such an assessment High
value trees or groups of trees can be injured or
partially destroyed resulting in not only the
loss in value of the trees but costly tree
removals after the construction is completed.

Planning
Phase. Many times it is necessary to
inventory existing trees and place them on a
the site plan. Consideration should be given
to both above and below ground activities.
Trunks, root systems, canopy spread, and
even root systems from neighboring
properties can be impacted during
construction and should be noted. Which
trees to save can be achieved in many ways
and every site is different. Digital
pictures should be part of any assessment
made.
-
Design
Phase. After it is determined what trees
should be preserved it is very important to
consider the following parts of the
construction process in relation to the
these trees.
-
grading and
soil storage
-
construction
entry and access
-
construction
vehicle parking, fueling, and maintenance
